Implant-Retained Dentures in Sarasota, FL
If you wear a traditional denture, you already know the problems. It moves when you eat. It needs adhesive that stops working by mid-afternoon. The upper plate covers your palate, so food tastes flat. And every year it fits a little worse, because the bone underneath keeps shrinking.
Implant-retained dentures fix all of that by anchoring the denture to implants placed in your jaw.
Two approaches
Snap-in (removable overdenture). Two to four implants per arch, with attachments that the denture clicks onto. You take it out at night to clean it. It doesn’t move while you eat and, on the upper, we can open up the palate so you taste food again. This is the more affordable route.
Fixed full arch. Four to six implants per arch supporting a bridge that only your dentist removes. It’s the closest thing to having your own teeth back — you brush it in your mouth and it never comes out. You may know it as All-on-4 or teeth-in-a-day. Higher investment, and the result most patients describe as life-changing.
We’ll walk you through both with your scan on the screen, and tell you which your bone actually supports.
Why the prosthodontist training matters here
Full-arch work is the most technically demanding thing in restorative dentistry. You’re establishing bite height, midline, lip support, and tooth position for an entire mouth at once, with no natural teeth left as a reference. Get it wrong and the patient can’t chew, or the smile doesn’t match the face.
Three years of prosthodontic residency is largely about this. Dr. Kulangara trained on implant-supported complete and partial dentures at a VA hospital, where complex full-arch cases are routine, and later taught prosthodontics at NYU.
What to expect
Most patients follow this arc: consultation and 3D scan, any necessary extractions with implants placed the same visit, an immediate temporary bridge so you never go without teeth, three to six months of healing, then the final prosthesis in [zirconia / acrylic].
If you’re having teeth removed, you leave that appointment with a fixed temporary in place. Nobody goes home toothless.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert my existing denture? Sometimes. If your current denture fits well and is in good shape, we can often add attachments and retrofit it to new implants, which saves money.
How many implants do I need? Two to four for a snap-in lower, four for a snap-in upper, four to six for a fixed arch. Bone density and quality determine the number, not a formula.
Will it feel like my real teeth? A fixed arch comes close. Most patients get back to eating steak, apples, and corn on the cob within a few months.
How do I clean them? Snap-in dentures come out at night and get brushed like a regular denture, plus you brush the attachments. Fixed arches are brushed in place with a water flosser, plus professional cleanings here.
Am I too old for this? Age isn’t the limiting factor. Health and bone are. We treat patients well into their eighties.
